Renowned underground filmmaker Todd Verow’s new documentary The End of Cruising is a fascinating exploration of how changes in urban planning and technology have brought about the ‘end’ of cruising as we once knew it. In a series of short films, it explores different cruising spots in the US, UK and Europe through stories told by the men who have frequented them (including some very active ones in the former World Trade Center). It’s political, it’s sexy and at times sexually explicit. The End of Cruising is a timely examination of gay male cruising and public sex.

LOVE HARD is a work of docu-portraiture from Sensate Films about BDSM and intimacy. In its inquiry into the loves and lives of 5 subjects, it presents unique, articulate, and thoughtful perspectives on how kink can function in our lives – as a practice of art or intimacy, as a mode of expression or release, as an iteration or an obliteration of self, as a way to play, a way to fuck, a way to love, a way to be ordinary.

Perv’s first MELBOURNE SCREENING (Saturday 5th July @ Hare Hole) : She Said Boom: The Story of Fifth Column + The Stain [Live]

SHE SAID BOOM

She Said Boom: The Story of Fifth Column is a documentary about the multi-disciplinary post-punk band Fifth Column, a group of women from Toronto came together in 1981 and ended up collaborating for almost twelve years. They united to use music, film, and self-publication to defy conventions of art practice, gender ideas, and to challenge homophobia. These endeavours snowballed into global art and political movements. Their commitment to working outside a capitalist structure made it impossible for them to claim their due as musicians and artists, despite having garnered worldwide notoriety for their work. She Said Boom explores the contributions of this group of young people to the core of Canada’s rich subculture, and investigates the reasons these cultures often slip through the cracks of our history and art-heritage.

The film tells the inspirational story of a small group of outsiders creating a new reality. Their world exists in opposition to a culture that excludes and rejects them, but it is no utopia. Strong personalities with strong ideas collaborate and also come into conflict and out burst great queer films, zines and music. Alienated from everyday life, a small group of women artists in Toronto in the 1980s created a queer subculture that was destined to catch fire and influence many bohemians and outsiders around the world.

Director Kevin Hegge interviews Fifth Column members Caroline Azar, Beverly Breckenridge and G.B. Jones, along with other collaborators including Bruce LaBruce, Vaginal Davis and Kathleen Hanna. It makes for an in-depth look at the work and the era that it came out of, and the implications and challenges of that history for contemporary queer culture. Their legendary fights were a critical part of a tremendous body of work and way of life that waged total war against art practice, gender norms, and politics.

+ A special live performance from ‘live marriage between music and and performance’ The Stain before the screening!
